CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Pfeiffer University’s Hanna Holmstrom  (Bredaryd, SWEDEN) broke a 1-1 tie with 6:37 in the second overtime period as the Lady Falcons defeated the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles 2-1 in women’s soccer action on Friday night at the Queens Sports Complex. The neutral site contest in the Queens Soccer Classic was the opener for both teams. Carson-Newman is ranked #5 in the NSCAA/ preseason poll.

After an hour and 15 minutes of scoreless soccer, Pfeiffer freshman Mariah Martinez (League City, TX) put home the first goal of 2010 finding the back of the net after corralling a loose ball that rebounded off of a Carson-Newman defender. With just five seconds left in the second half, the Lady Eagles Lezeth Munguia found teammate Trenna Howell who notched the equalizer to force the overtime periods.

Each team fired just one shot in the first 10 minutes of overtime as both defenses continued to grind it out until Alyssa Wombwell (Grand Blanc, MI) hit Holmstrom for the game-winner in the 104th minute of play. Pfeiffer booted just two shots on goal in the match with both ending up in the nylon. Jamie Alcala (Fredericksburg, VA) got the win in goal turning away four of the five Carson-Newman shots on net.

The Lady Falcons will return to Queens on Sunday afternoon for their final contest in the season opening classic. Pfeiffer will battle with Flagler beginning at 1:00 p.m. while Carson-Newman follows against host Queens.
