SOMERS, Wis. -
The womens soccer showdown between Northern Kentucky University and Wisconsin-Parkside lived up to expectations Friday, and the Rangers pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory against the visiting Norse in a battle of nationally ranked teams.

Shannon Beckers goal in the 99th minute gave Wisconsin-Parkside the victory. Wisconsin-Parkside, which is ranked No. 22 in the NCAA Division II national poll, improved to 6-1 overall, 6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Rangers also extended their winning streak to six games.

NKU, which is ranked No. 5 nationally in the NCAA Division II poll, dropped to 5-1-1 overall, 4-1 in the GLVC. The loss also halted the Norses five-game winning streak.

Both teams struck early with scores. Wisconsin-Parkside took a 1-0 lead at the 5:44 mark when Kristen Benson found the back of the net off an assist from Brynn Darga. NKU countered a minute later on Claudia Bryants second goal of the season to tie the contest at 1-all.

It remained that way until the closing minute of the first overtime. Becker found an opening in the box and sent a shot into the net for her ninth goal of the season to end the contest. It also extended NKUs recent misfortunes at Wood Road Field.

NKU has not defeated Wisconsin-Parkside on the road since Oct. 5, 2001, when the Norse posted a 3-0 win against the Rangers at Wood Road Field. NKU still leads the all-time series against Wisconsin-Parkside, 10-7-2.

Wisconsin-Parkside finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots. NKU held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. NKU goalie Rachael Wood had five saves.

NKU concludes the two-game road trip Sunday with a GLVC contest at Saint Josephs. The Norse play host to Illinois-Springfield at the NKU Soccer Stadium next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
