Wheaton tops Carleton 4-1 in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Wheaton, Ill. - The Wheaton College womens soccer team defeated Carleton College 4-1 on Saturday in a Second Round match of the 2010 NCAA Division III Womens Soccer Tournament. With tonights victory, Wheaton has advanced to the Division III Sectional Semifinal to be played next Friday at a site and time that will be announced by the NCAA on Monday. In the Sectional Semifinal, Wheaton (20-2-1) will face the winner of a Second Round match between Lynchburg and Emory that will be played on Sunday at noon (CST) at Emory.
Carleton (15-3-2) struck first in tonights Second Round Match, putting pressure on Wheaton early in the match. Carletons Marlena Hartman-Filson scored on a rebound, just 10:33 into the match to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. With 11-seconds left in the first half, Wheaton scored the equalizing goal as a Wheaton shot hit the cross bar and was collected by Thunder junior Jaime Orewiler, who put together a sliding shot to tie the match at 1-1.
Wheaton took the lead for good in the 59th minute when a Katelyn Kishkunas pass was expertly sent to Kerri Shannon who volleyed the ball and put it inside the top of the net to a 2-1 Wheaton lead. Shannon scored again when a loose ball was unable to be cleared by Carleton as she put the ball into the back of the net on a Hillary Quinn assist. Wheatons fourth and final goal came in the 85th minute when Orewiler beat Carleton goalkeeper Kate Trenerry on a pass from Kristen Clark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hilary Barreto played the first 18 minutes of the match for the Thunder, allowing one goal. Freshman Maddie Allen was net for 72 minutes of action, making three saves with no goals allowed. Trenerry made five saves and allowed four goals for the Knights. Wheaton had a 14-13 advantage in shots in the match, with a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Carleton was awarded four corner kicks in the match and Wheaton attempted three.
