HSU Advances To Sectional Finals

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' Brittany Vacca scored two goals off of corner kicks in the first half and the Cowgirls improved to 22-0 with a 2-0 win over Redlands in the Sectional Round of the Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Friday afternoon at Abilene.
Vacca, who is one of the top defenders in the nation and had not scored a goal all season, came up big on corner kicks both teams. HSU had the wind in the first half and had 10 corners in the first half.
The first goal came just 2:19 into the game. Katie Kuykendall, the nation's leader in assists sent the corner over the top to Sarah Stansell who headed it down to Vacca who finished it off.
Vacca then took a deflected corner in the box at the 11:32 mark and found the net. The Cowgirls could have scored several more times in the first half but Rachel Foreman was superb in net for the Bulldogs. She had six of those saves in the first half.
In the second half, the game was more wide open. Redlands outshot the Cowgirls 9-6 in their half with the wind at their back. However, Rebecca Roth stopped both shots on frame and HSU advanced to the Sectional final for the second time in school history.
For the game, HSU outshot Redlands 18-10 overall and 10-2 on goal. HSU had 16 corners in the game compared to just five for Redlands.
The Cowgirls will play the winner of Wheaton and Emory at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Redlands ends its season with a record of 12-10.
