St. Edward’s gets last-second win
Servage struck a ball past the diving goalie with .39 seconds left
With only .39 seconds left in the match St. Edward's Kelly Servage struck a ball past the diving goalie Kerry Edwards for Dallas Baptist, to give the Hilltoppers a 2-1 victory.
The win was St. Edward's first Heartland Conference Tournament championship and it gave them the automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament. This is the third match between the two schools for 2011 with all three matches being decided by one goal.
St. Edward's won two of the three matches but Dallas Baptist won the regular season Heartland Conference Championship because St. Edward's also had a tie on their final conference record.
St. Edward's started the scoring early when Brianna Hinnenkamp pushed a ball pass the DBU defense off an assist by Bethany Bennett. The score stayed 1-0 until 74th minute when DBU was awarded a free kick. DBU senior Brittany Layne struck a perfect ball past three Hilltopper defenders and the diving Claire Tilton, who was in goal for SEU.
With the game looking like it was heading to overtime, Servage some how managed to strike a ball that bounced over Edwards into the back of the net. The goal sealed the match and a trip to the NCAA tournament for the Hilltoppers.
