GOLDEN, Colo. -- No. 21 Minnesota State-Mankato advanced in the NCAA tournament on Friday afternoon after topping Metro State 3-1. The victory marks the first NCAA tournament win for MSU since 2008, when the Mavericks topped Colorado Mines 3-1.

Minnesota State scored late in the first half at the 30th minute as MSU junior Brianne West and sophomore Tori Meinhardt used back-and-forth passing to set up the game's first goal off the foot of West.

The Mavericks landed three shots on goal to the Roadrunners two in the first half.

Metro State’s Becca Medina tied the game early in the second half as she beat MSU freshman keeper Molly McGough in the 48th minute to knot the game at 1-1.

Meinhardt put the Mavericks back on top at the 62nd minute from a shot across the field into the upper right corner of the net. The goal marked Meinhardt’s third game-winner and seventh goal of the season.

The Mavericks extended their lead to 3-1 when the Roadrunners scored an own goal after a Cassie Weik corner kick in the 70th minute.
