Addison notches pair of second-half goals to lift Lakers to win
ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Top-ranked Grand Valley State advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament after defeating Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 on a windy Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Soccer Fields.
GVSU moves on to meet No. 19 Northern Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 18 in the regional finals in Golden, Colo.
Junior Ashley Botts found the back of the net at the 24:30 mark, thanks to an assist off a set piece from Alyssa Mira. The goal was Botts' 18th of the season and 45th of her career.
The Lakers held on to the 1-0 lead into halftime after holding a 15-1 edge in shots and 5-0 margin in corner kicks.
GVSU added two more goals during the second half, the first in the 67th minute off junior Kayla Addison's first goal of the game. Botts connected with Addison just outside the four-yard line, who was able to send it into the left side of the net.
Botts and Addison once again connected in the 88th minute, when Botts sent ball to the left side. Addison made a move around a defender and kicked the ball through the legs of the encroaching UW-Parkside keeper, sealing the 3-1 victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside was able to get on the board when Kristen Benson successfully converted a penalty kick due to a foul in the box, ending the Lakers' shutout streak of just over 1,025 minutes.
For the game, the Lakers held a 20-7 shot margin, including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Chelsea Parise tallied four saves in the win, but snapped a 1,003 minute and 47 second shutout streak. UW-Parkside keeper Cassie Glowdowski tallied six saves in the loss.
GVSU is now 19-0-2 on the season, while UW-Parkside closes its season with a 13-4-2 mark.
