William Smith edges Wheaton (Mass.)
Mmutla’s first-half goal leads Herons to third round
GENEVA, N.Y. -- Freshman Dineo Mmutla scored in the 20th minute as as No. 2 William Smith held off Wheaton (Mass.) for a 1-0 win in an NCAA tournament second-round match played on Cozzens Field on Sunday. The Herons advance to the third round where they will meet Middlebury on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The Lyons finished their season with a 16-4-3 overall record. William Smith will take on Middlebury next weekend.
The Herons improved to 18-0-1 and recorded their 18th shutout of the season, a new William Smith record. Senior Amanda Davis did not need to make a single save in all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons. She is now tied for fourth on the William Smith list for shutouts in a season with 12 and ranks second all-time with 43 career shutouts. Davis also ranks second in Heron history with 59 career victories.
At 19:20 in the first half, Mmutla scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. She got the ball in the box and made her way around a Lyon defender before drilling a shot into the back of the net. It was Mmutla's fifth game-winning goal this fall. She also leads William Smith with 22 points this season.
Senior Chelsea England came inches away from making it 2-0 in the 62nd minute, when she fired a shot that sailed just above the crossbar. Wheaton had an offensive flurry in the 77th minute. Kirsten Luber took a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a Heron defender. Seconds later, a shot by Rachelle Rodman went wide of the right goal post. Senior Jessie Tarantino also took away the chance for a Lyon player to break through the William Smith defense with a sliding tackle late in the second half.
Senior Erin Cawley finished with 10 saves in 90 minutes in goal for Wheaton.
William Smith out-shot the Lyons 27-3. The Herons recorded 11 shots on goal and did not allow Wheaton to put a single shot on goal. William Smith also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
