TROY, N.Y. -- Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scored two first-half goals and held No. 10 William Smith to a total of two shots on goal on its way to a 2-0 victory in a Liberty League game at ECAV Stadium.

Rensselaer has now won four consecutive games to improve to 6-3-0 overall. The Herons fall to 6-2-1.

The Engineers opened the scoring when junior Sara Rothschild collected a loose ball and scored from 16 yards out just 8:25 into the contest. Rensselaer senior Shannon Maguire began the play with a through ball that could not be controlled by either a William Smith defender or the goalkeeper. Rothschild took advantage, scoring her fifth goal of the season.

Maguire made it 2-0 when she scored on a hard shot into the top of the left corner from 35 yards out. The Herons' Chelsea Dunay dived for the ball and got her hand on it, but could not keep it out of the goal. It was Maguire's second score of the year.

The Engineers had a solid chance to make it a 3-0 game early in the second half. Sophomore Taylor Korytko headed the ball off the post and then saw her rebound, also a header, get stopped by Dunay. William Smith's best opportunity came just minutes later when one of its shots was blocked out of bounds, leading to a corner kick.

Rensselaer goalkeeper Steph Vargas made two saves, while Dunay stopped three shots.
