Adelphi victorious against top-seeded American International in shutout
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Top-seeded and 10th-ranked American International was upset by eighth-seeded Adelphi 2-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast-10 Championship Tournament on Wednesday at Ronald J. Abdow Field.
The game was scoreless until senior forward Emily Masiello scored off her own corner kick with 8:13 left in the second half. The corner bent back to the goal and went off the hand of sophomore keeper Samantha Tabak as she tried to punch it away and into the back of the net.
The Yellow Jackets then pressed on offense but were caught upfield in the final minute and the Panthers took advantage to seal the win. Junior midfielder Aimee Goldstein sent Masiello in on a breakaway. Masiello then kicked the ball inside the right post from the left side of the box with 17.4 seconds remaining in the contest.
AIC had a chance to score a minute prior to Masiello's first goal as the ball was sent into the box and right to freshman forward Alyssa Werbicki, who was in front of the net. However, her redirect sailed over the crossbar and out of play.
Another scoring opportunity occured when junior forward Caroline Boyce launched a shot off the cross bar in the closing minute and Werbicki's rebound attempt was blocked at the top of the box.
Sophomore keeper Sam Whitney tallied six saves to earn the win in net. Tabak finished with five saves and suffered her first loss since the team's season-opener against LIU Post.
