BYU's Kayla Varner converted the Cougars' eighth penalty-kick attempt in a shootout victory against Marquette on Saturday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division I women's soccer championship.

After a hard-fought effort through two overtime periods, top-seeded BYU (20-1-2) won on penalty kicks 6-5 to end Marquette's deepest run in the tournament in program history. The Golden Eagles finished 18-2-3.

BYU will play Friday against either Baylor or North Carolina.
