ELSAH, Ill. -- Third-ranked Washington (Mo.) posted a 6-0 victory at Principia on Tuesday night in its final tune-up before conference play begins this weekend. Washington improves its overall record to 8-1 with the win, while Principia drops to 3-5.
The Bears started slow as Principia recorded the first two shots of the game, but Washington got things going after a goal by sophomore Anna Sippel at the 13:56 mark. Sophomore Liz Collins sent a cross into the box that Sippel settled, and then fired a shot to the near corner for her second goal of the season.
Washington made it 2-0 just before halftime as junior All-American Anna Zambricki crossed a ball into the box that junior Lillie Toaspern headed into the net at 42:56. The Bears had an 8-7 advantage in shots in the opening half, and sophomore goalkeeper Amy French made a pair of saves.
The Bears continued to put the pressure on early in the second half, wearing down a Principia squad that used just one field sub the entire game. Sophomore Olivia Lillegraven and Zambricki scored a pair of early second-half goals to extend the lead to 4-0. The goal for Lillegraven was her team-leading eighth of the season, while Zambricki notched her sixth of the year.
Washington made it 5-0 at 79:26 when freshman Allie Schiffman fired a shot from 35 yards out that snuck over the head of Principia goalkeeper Genevieve Smith for her first career goal. Collins rounded out the scoring with a goal at the 82:59 mark.
The Bears outshot Principia 28-12 for the game, including 20-5 in the second half.
French (45 minutes, two saves) and freshman Lizzy Crist (33 minutes, one save) and Nina Gerson (12 minutes, on save) combined for the Bears’ eighth shutout of the year in goal. The Bears have allowed one goal in 818 minutes played this season.
