BC cruises past Illinois

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior Gibby Wagner, freshman Hayley Dowd, sophomore McKenzie Meehan and classmate Lauren Bernard all recorded goals to lead Boston College to a 4-1 victory against Illinois on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles got on the board first in the sixth minute of the match. Gibby Wagner was on the far-post side and one-timed a rebound into the goal off a shot from Dowd for the 1-0 BC lead. Dowd was credited with the assist on the goal.

Dowd doubled the Eagles’ lead in the 39th minute. She forward dribbled into the box, ripped a shot into the left side of the net for the 2-0 lead.

Illinois immediately responded in the 40th minute when sophomore Amy Feher connected on a long pass into the box. She headed the ball between the pipes over BC goalkeeper Alex Johnson’s head.

Just two minutes later, Meehan dribbled down the left side and scored on a deflection into the net to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles concluded the scoring when Bernard found the net in the 76th to triple the Eagles’ lead. Steph McCaffrey assisted on the play.

Boston College returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday in Tallahassee, Fla. as it takes on ACC foe Florida State.
