Roundup: Fort Lewis wins in rain check

No. 4 Tampa 5, Palm Beach Atlantic 0

TAMPA, Fla. -- Fourth-ranked Tampa defeated Palm Beach Atlantic (1-3-1) by a score of 5-0 on Wednesday night at Pepin Stadium.

The 2013 squad possesses the school record for most consecutive wins to begin the season and is quickly approaching the record for consecutive wins overall at 10.

Within the first 10 minutes of the game, Tampa got off to an early lead with as Cici Gonzalez blasted a rocket past the Palm Beach Atlantic keeper Allison Fox in the upper left corner of the net.  Spartan momentum continued throughout the half as they dominated Sailfish territory.  Senior Shannon Walisch lengthened the Tampa lead by adding a second goal off a Palm Beach Atlantic defenseman.

Rounding out the first half, the Spartans outshot the Sailfish 7-3.  Both keepers, Tampa’s Alyson Gregorowicz and Palm Beach Atlantic’s Fox, tallied two saves in the half.

The Spartans were off to a slugglish start in the second half with the Sailfish registering five shots.  However the team came back to life in the 77th minute with a cross from midfielder Chelsea Martin to Cici Gonzalez to register her second goal of the game.

With a second wind, the Spartans registered two goals within the final five minutes of the half.  Midfielder Cina Salemi dribbled the ball down the field to draw Fox out of the net with a cross to Martin who registered the fourth goal.  Nearly one minute later, Arielle Gonzalez brought the Spartans to the final score with an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.

The Sailfish showed great effort in the second half but were unable to convert.  Palm Beach Atlantic tallied two yellow cards in their attempts to regain possession.

Tampa rounded out the second half with 12 shots and four shots on goal.  Gregorowicz captured three additional saves during her time in the net.

No. 5 Fort Lewis 2, New Mexico Highlands 1

DURANGO, Colo. -- Facing each other for the second time in three days, Fort Lewis defeated New Mexico Highlands on Wednesday afternoon 2-1 at Dirks Field.  The win moves the Skyhawks to 6-0-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The game was originally scheduled to be played this past Sunday, but weather forced the game to be cancelled in the 68th minute with the Skyhawks leading, 4-0.

After a scoreless first half, the Skyhawks Brooke Milliet took a cross pass from Sam Weiss to give Fort Lewis a 1-0 lead at 53:53.  Eight minutes later the game was knotted when New Mexico Highlands scored the first goal on the Skyhawks all year.  Grace Thompson played a rebound off the post from Andrea Duke's shot attempt that ended the Skyhawks 553:10 minutes of shutout soccer.

With twenty-four minutes left in regulation, Nicole Schumacher netted the game-winning goal on a free kick 30 yards out.  Both goals scored by Milliet and Schumacher were their first of the season.

Fort Lewis out-shot the Cowgirls 9-1 in the first half, but NMHU answered with a 7-3 shot advantage in the second half.  Weiss led all players with three shots in the game.

Caitlyn Espinosa stopped two of three shots on goal to earn her sixth win of the season.
