No. 5 William Smith 3, Bard 0
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Fifth-ranked William Smith ran its winning streak to nine with a 3-0 victory against Bard in a Liberty League match on Saturday afternoon.
The Herons, 9-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Liberty League, outshot Bard (4-6-1, 0-3-0) 16-4.
The eventual game winner was scored in the eighth minute, when first-year Kara Shue forced a turnover on Bard's goal line out near the corner, then struck a low pass to junior Madeline Buckley who fired a shot from the doorstep into the roof of the net for a 1-0 lead.
First-year Evie Manning made it 2-0 in the 34th minute, when she put her own rebound in after her header attempt hit the post and came right back to her.
Shue finished the scoring in the 69th minute with a header off a cross from junior Brenna Kincaid. Senior Chelsea Dunay made two saves for the Herons to notch her fifth shutout this season. Kelsey O'Brien played the first 45 minutes in goal for Bard and made three saves. Lily Harris came in for the second half and also made three saves. William Smith held a 3-1 advantage in corners.
No. 8 Messiah 2, Lebanon Valley 0
GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Second-half goals from Corinne Wulf and Nikki Elsaesser broke a scoreless tie at the half to give Messiah a 2-0 win against Lebanon Valley. The Messiah defense collected its sixth consecutive shutout with the decision as the team moved to 8-2-1. Lebanon Valley falls to 5-4-2 with the loss.
Last season the Falcons overcame a 0-2 hole to the Dutchmen on their home field to win 3-2. On Saturday, it looked as though the teams were again heading toward a tight finish. Each team did find a few opportunities to push through a goal in the first-half, though most of the opening 45 minutes included inconsistent possession by both teams.
Messiah came out of the break with increased aggressiveness and, in turn, created more opportunities to break through. In the 49th minute they capitalized on one such opportunity after Emily Schneider made an assertive run onto a cross from Alicia Frey. Schneider never did touch the ball on Frey's pass from the right end line, though Becca Sykes was forced to slide out in an attempt to reach the ball first. With the Messiah winger flipping over Sykes, the ball came loose and landed at the feet of Corinne Wulf for a quick one-touch to put the Falcons up 1-0.
Near the end of the game Elsaesser put the game away with a quick shot past Reinhold in front of the goal. Her chance came after a deflection from Frey's shot landed at her feet.
The Falcons' second-half dominance was made possible largely to another stellar performance from their defense. Messiah held the Dutchmen to just four shots—15 shots less than their season average—as they collected their sixth consecutive shutout and eighth overall. Audra Larson did her part by collecting four saves.
No. 9 Misericorida 8, Delaware Valley 0
DALLAS, Pa. -- Megan Mahoney had a hat trick 26 minutes into the game and Meghan Antrim added two first-half goals as Misericordia opened Freedom Conference play with a 8-0 win against Delaware Valley.
The Cougars totaled seven first-half goals in boucing back from their midweek loss to nationally-ranked Ithaca. The win moves MU to 8-2-1 overall while the loss drops the Aggies to 2-9-1 in 2013.
Mahoney got the scoring started just four minutes into the game after taking a helper from senior Erin McGreal. McGreal had her initial shot from eight yards out was blocked by a defender but she was able to retain possession and send a cross to Mahoney for an easy shot.
Just 25 seconds later, junior Megan Lannigan scored her seventh goal to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Mahoney added an assist to her day in the 14th minute when she received a pass at the 20-yard line and left it for Erin Roberts, who immediately turned it into the Cougars third goal with a long shot off her right foot. Exactly three minutes later, McGreal sent a cross to the net, where it was headed wide by Mahoney and eventually put in by the foot of Antrim.
Mahoney added her sixth and seventh goals of the year in the 25th and 26th minutes before Antrim ended the first half scoring in the 33rd minute after taking a pass from Caitlyn Boyle. Mahoney, Antrim and Lannigan each have seven goals on the season.
In the second half, Tina Colatriano scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Emily Esposito.
No. 10 Montclair State 3, Rutgers-Camden 0
MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Freshmen Erin Sullivan and Jennie Hornstra scored five minutes apart in the first half helping No. 10 Montclair State remain unbeaten with a 3-0 win against Rutgers-Camden at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday evening.
Junior Melanie Greco added a goal in the second half for the Red Hawks, who upped their record to 11-0-0 overall, 4-0-0 in the NJAC. MSU also tied the program record for the longest winning streak matching the 11 consecutive wins set in 2000.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren West had eight saves for Rutgers-Camden, which has dropped four consecutive as the Scarlet Raptors fell to 3-7-1, 1-4-0 in the league.
