No. 1 Grand Valley State 3, Northern Michigan 0
MARQUETTE, Mich. -- For the 14th consecutive match, Grand Valley State left the pitch victorious. Three different Lakers found the back of the goal to notch a 3-0 victory at Northern Michigan.
Senior midfielder Shelby Humphries scored the game-winning goal at the 16:38 mark of the opening stanza. Humphries headed a cross-pass from redshirt freshman forward Olivia Emery into the goal to put GVSU on the board.
Freshman midfielder Marti Corby extended the lead with a shot from the top of the box in the 22nd minute. Junior midfielder Charlie Socia earned her first assist of the season on Corby's goal.
The No. 1 Lakers built a 3-0 lead off freshman forward Kendra Stauffer's ninth goal of the 2013 campaign in the 37th minute.
Senior goalkeeper Abbey Miller stopped all three of Northern Michigan's on target shots to post her ninth solo shutout of the year. It is also the 14th time this season GVSU has held an opponent scoreless.
The victory raises the Lakers' overall record to 14-0-1 and improves their conference mark to 11-0-0. GVSU cliched its ninth conecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title on Friday.
No. 2 Minnesota State-Mankato 0, No. 25 Southwest Minnesota State 0
MANKATO, Minn. -- On Sunday afternoon at The Pitch, second-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato nearly doubled 25th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State in shots and shots on goal as the two teams played to a scoreless draw in a key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference showdown.
The tie moves MSU to 14-1-1 overall and 12-0-1 in NSIC action but snaps an 11-match winning streak for the Mavericks. SMSU now stands 14-1-1 on the year and 11-1-1 within the league.
The Purple and Gold extends its NSIC and home unbeaten streaks to 33 matches, which are tied for 10th- and 13th-best, respectively, in NCAA Division II history. MSU's conference unbeaten streak is the all-time NSIC record.
Minnesota State opened up a 10-4 advantage in shots, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes but was unable to solve Mustang freshman Brienna Dehkes.
The Mavericks nearly finished a pair of ideal scoring chances in the second half. Sophomore Korey Kronforst got behind the SMSU back line in the 69th minute and fired a shot that Dehkes deflected off the crossbar and over the net. MSU threatened once more in the 88th minute, but senior Courtney Vallarelli had her header turned away by Dehkes as well.
Southwest Minnesota State's best scoring opportunity of the match came in the 99th minute of overtime number one. After a MSU foul just outside the box, senior Vanesa Corona bent a free kick around the Maverick wall, but sophomore Lauren Hoeppner made a diving save just inside the left post to deny the chance.
MSU gave the Mustangs all they could handle in the second overtime amassing seven shots -- with three on goal -- and four corner kicks, but the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
No. 4 Colorado School of Mines 3, Western State 1
GUNNISON, Colo. -- Meeting Western State for the first time on the pitch Sunday in Gunnison, No. 4 Colorado School of Mines slowed the Mountaineers 3-1 at Gateway Field and clinched the program's first RMAC regular-season championship.
In its ninth season, Mines (15-0-1, 12-0 RMAC) earned the outright conference title with their program-record 12th consecutive win and a 3-2 home loss by No. 10 Metro State to New Mexico Highlands earlier in the afternoon.
With 36 points, the women are eight points ahead of the Roadrunners in second and nine in front of third-place Fort Lewis (13-3, 9-3 RMAC) with two contests remaining on the docket.
Senior Bree Archuleta and sophomore Rachael Turner each finished with three points, compiling one goal and assist apiece. Turner recorded her fifth goal and conference-leading fourth game-winner at 64:07 on an assist from junior Kendra Bulawa. Archuleta iced the win with 3:06 remaining in regulation, scoring her fifth by way of a Turner pass.
Freshman Jaclyn Knott keyed the Orediggers to a 1-0 lead 5:24 left in the first half off a feed by Archuleta. Knott leads all Mines freshmen with five goals and shares second overall on the team with Turner and Archuleta.
Western State (6-9-1, 3-8-1 RMAC) and Courtnee Urrea broke through in the 67th minute, only the fifth goal given up by Mines in 22 matches.
Knott had a game-high four shots on goal as the women outshot the Mountaineers 19-8 and put 12 shots on target. Archuleta and freshman Cari Smith each had two shots on frame.
Sophomore Jayln Yates (15-0-1) collected the win in goal with five saves.
The Orediggers rank sixth in the Division II archives in longest unbeaten streaks at 30 games and 19th in consecutive conference matches without a loss with 22. Mines is also one away from tying for 18th in the record book for consecutive conference wins with 15.
No. 5 West Florida 4, Delta State 0
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Fifth-ranked West Florida extended its winning streak to eight and its unbeaten streak to 27 in a 4-0 win against Delta State on Sunday afternoon at the UWF Soccer Complex.
Senior Alex Pickrell scored the game winner after a throw in from senior Chelsea Palmer in the 10th minute for her first goal of the season as the Argonauts concluded October 8-0 having outscored opponents 24-1.
All eight UWF (11-0-3, 8-0-1 Gulf South Conference) seniors started the senior day match. In the 30th minute, junior Kelly Andres sent a pass to senior Sashana Campbell, who crossed it to Palmer, who put it into the net for the second goal of the game. Palmer has five goals and five assists for 15 points in the past four games.
In the second half, Campbell garnered her second assist of the day when she drove to the side of the DSU box before crossing a pass to junior Julianne Gaubron who scored her second goal of the season with 64:03 on the clock. Campbell has one goal and four assists in the past four games.
The Argos capped off the scoring at the 72:32 mark when freshman Sara Helgadottir sent a pass to freshman Freyja Vidarsdottir, who passed it into the box to freshman Emily Vogler, who scored the first goal of her career to put UWF up 4-0.
No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus 1, No. 20 Sonoma State 0
TURLOCK, Calif. -- At the end of the last season, the tide turned on the Warriors when they lost to Sonoma State at home in the finale. That wasn't going to happen again in 2013 as the Warriors beat the Seawolves 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, No. 7 Cal State Stanislaus won the CCAA North Division and secured the top seed in the conference tournament, to be held on Nov. 8 and 10 on its home turf. The Warriors remain unbeaten as they improved their program-best marks to 14-0-2 overall and 12-0-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Karenee Demery's goal in the 12th minute turned out to the be only score needed in the division clincher. Demery received a long ball from Katelyn Nebesnick and dribbled around defenders and blasted a long shot to the bottom left corner of the net for goal.
With 19 goals this season, Demerey has tied her own school record that she set twice before. She has amassed 73 career scores, 28 assists for 174 career points at Cal State Stanislaus heading into the fnal regular season weekend.
The Warriors and the Seawolves tied 2-2 on Sept. 20 in Rohnert Park on a last-minute goal by Nebesnick. Stanislaus was more in control on Sunday, out-pacing the Seawolves 15-3 in shots (3-0 in shots on goal). It marked the 10th time this season that the defense has held opponents to two shots on goal or less -- and the fourth time with none.
Sonoma State, now 10-3-3 overall and 8-3-3 in the CCAA, has also earned a berth in the conference tournament with 27 points and two matches to play. The Seawolves were held to a season low with three shots and none on frame.
No. 9 Quincy 3, Southern Indiana 1
QUINCY, Ill. -- Quincy clinched its second consecutive outright Great Lakes Valley Conference regular-season title with a 3-1 win at Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Hawks (14-0-3, 12-0-2 GLVC) clinched the No. 1 seed in the GLVC tournament, which will start with a home game at Legends Stadium next Sunday. With a win that day, QU will host the remainder of the tournament on Nov. 8 and 10. The regular-season championship is Quincy's third in eight seasons under head coach Dave Musso.
The Screaming Eagles did end the Lady Hawks' six-game shutout streak. With less than three minutes to play, Katelan Carneal converted a penalty kick to make the final margin 3-1. That was the first penalty kick against the Lady Hawks this season. The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 668 minutes, 56 seconds by the Quincy defense.
For the second consecutive game, the Lady Hawks scored in the final minute of the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Sophomore central midfielder Haylye Markway found the back of the net off a pass from sophomore defender Taylor Lindwedel with just 26 seconds remaining in the first half. It was Markway's second goal of the season and Lindwedel's third assist.
The Lady Hawks -– who outshot the Screaming Eagles (9-6-1, 7-6-1 GLVC) 19-8 for the game -- maintained their 1-0 lead into the second half. They finally found some breathing room in the 82nd minute as senior defensive midfielder Lori Mannion beat USI keeper Jackie Lohmann to give QU a 2-0 lead. Senior forward Maddie Torretta picked up the assist. It was Mannion's first goal of the year.
Less than a minute later, senior forward Jaclyn Mastroianni scored her ninth goal of the season to put the game away. Torretta was credited with her second assist of the game and season.
Senior goalkeeper Jodi Chapie had three saves for QU. Lohmann had six stops for the Eagles.
New Mexico Highlands 2, No. 10 Metro State 1
DENVER -- Anyssa Dagnino scored three times as New Mexico Highlands won 3-2 at No. 10 Metro State on Sunday afternoon. It was Metro State's first loss to NMHU at home since 1996 as the Roadrunners fell to 11-2-3 overall and 9-2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Cowgirls improved to 8-5-3 and 6-5-1.
MSU Denver struck first as Marie Ipock's cross found Nicole Pollack in front of the net following a corner kick at 8:26.
Dagnino scored her first goal on a header off a corner kick at 17:23 and she scored again less than five minutes later on a breakaway. Ipock evened the score at 2-2 five minutes before halftime, finishing a cross from Carly Nelson in front of the goal. Dagnino provided the final goal of the game just 33 seconds into the second half, again scoring on a breakaway as the Roadrunners defense was unable to keep up.
Karisa Fernandez made four saves for the Roadrunners.
