Lynn 8, Albany State (Ga.) 0

May 12, 2005

Lynn University rode a strong pitching performance and a seven-run inning to a comfortable 8-0 win over Albany State University in Game Two of the NCAA Division II South Region tournament. With the win, the Fighting Knights (47-7) advanced to the next round to face No. 2 seed and host Alabama-Huntsville. Albany State (31-29) fell into the losers bracket.

Leading 1-0 on the strength of a lead-off homer by Danielle Curcio in the first inning, Lynn exploded with a barrage of offense in the third. The Knights hit three homeruns and posted seven runs to blow the game wide open.

First baseman Christina Rolla ignited the assault with a three-run homer. Then, after a double by Tiffani King, shortstop Alex Acosta smashed a two-run shot to make the score 6-0. Not even a pitching change could stop the bleeding as Rams reliever Chasity Dean was greeted with a solo homer by designated player Jenna Piotrowski. Sam Wilkenson rounded out the scoring in the third with an RBI single.

We ran into a bombshell today, said Albany State head coach Robert Skinner. Lynn is the best hitting team weve faced all year. They showed effectiveness on offense, and we couldnt get our offense going.

Lynn head coach Thomas Macera concurred with Skinners observation. Everybody was hitting the ball. We work a lot on hitting, and I was surprised, because (Albany State pitcher Corinna Garcia) is pretty good, said Macera. Everything we hit flew and we hit several foul home runs, and one that was robbed. Everything we hit, we hit hard.

Lynn starting pitcher Rachel Foster took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but had it broken up by a bloop single by Dean. Foster improved to 14-4 with the win. She faced 16 batters and stuck out four. Garcia (14-7) took the loss for Albany State, giving up six runs on seven hits and walking two.

She (Foster) pitched great, said Macera of his pitcher. We havent played in three weeks. Everybodys been playing except us, so it was kind of scary, but I had to throw her that game and she pitched great.

Left fielder Jennie Scott was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Rolla drove in three runs on a hit. She nearly had another homerun in the first inning, but ASU center fielder Amber Hanna leaping up and making a highlight reel catch.

Hanna saved us on one play out there today, and she made a couple of other great defensive plays as well, Skinner raved. She jumped over the fence and pulled back a home run for us. She had a tough year and Im really proud of how she played today.

Although the Knights won handily, coach Macera wasnt completely satisfied with his teams performance. We played okay today. Once again, we havent played in three weeks and we did better than I thought we would, he said. We made some mistakes out there that we need to fix, but we did okay today.
