Washington-St. Louis 6, St. Mary's (Minn.) 1

Cedar Rapids, Iowa The top-ranked Washington University softball team advanced to the Regional Championship game for the first time in school history with a 6-1 win over St. Marys University (Minn.) on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the losers bracket at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Washington University (47-2) will take on defending champion and second-seeded University of St. Thomas in the championship game at 10 a.m. on Monday. The Bears will have to defeat St. Thomas twice to advance to the Division III College World Series, held May 20-24 in Raleigh, N.C. The 47 wins also move the Bears into seventh place on the all-time Division III single-season wins list. WU is now just one win off the record of 48, set by The College of New Jersey.

In the first, freshman Laura D'Andrea, Prospect, Ill. (Mt. Prospect) led of the inning with a hit and then was sacrificed to second by junior Amanda Roberts, St. Louis, Mo. (Lindberg). Senior Liz Swary, Cleveland, Ohio (Shaker Heights) then gave the Bear s a 1-0 lead after she reached on an error by the left fielder scoring DAndrea.

Washington U. added three more runs in the second to jump ahead 4-0. Sophomore Jamie Kressel, Miami, Fla. (Miami Killian) doubled to lead off the inning and then junior Dionna Little, Plano, Texas (Plano) walked. DAndrea had an RBI single to make it 2-0 and then Swary tripled to right field scoring Little and DAndrea.

Swary drove in her fourth run of the game in the fourth with a single to score Roberts, who singled and stole second. Senior Jackie Burgdorf, Cincinnati, Ohio (Mount Notre Dame) added an RBI triple in the fifth to make it 6-0.

Swary finished 2-for-4 with four RBI as she moved into 14th place on the all-time Division III list with 174 career RBI. DAndrea and freshman Amy Vukovich, Portland, Ore. (Central Catholic) each had two hits for the Bears, who pounded out nine hits in the victory.

Sophomore Laurel Sagartz, Albuquerque, N.M. (Albuquerque Academy) picked up her 24th win on the mound pitching five innings, allowing no hits while striking out seven and walking none. Senior Victoria Ramsey, Pinckneyville, Ill. (Pinckneyville) pitched the final two innings allowing four hits and one earned run.
