FRESNO, Calif. -- The No. 15 Fresno State softball team opened NCAA Region 2 play with a 4-0 win over No. 24 Long Beach State.

All-America pitcher Jamie Southern threw a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 to improve to 27-3 on the season. With 12 10-strikeout games this year, Southern threw her 18th shutout of the season and, in the process, became the 10th NCAA Division I pitcher to amass 1,300 career strikeouts. With a career total of 1,302, Southern also pitched her 78th career shutout while tallying her 117th career victory.

Fresno State scored four runs on seven hits. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after one full inning of play before collecting a three-run third.

In the first with one out, sophomore catcher Nichole Willis tripled to right center to score Southern, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

In the third, junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark led off with a single to center field. Southern sacrificed Clark to second before Willis reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Freshman second baseman Kristin Sylvester doubled to left center to plate both Clark and Willis. Sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson then singled down the right field line to score Sylvester.

Using two pitchers, Long Beach starter Marcel Torres took the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits while striking out five in 5.0 innings of work. Jennifer Martinez pitched the final 1.0 inning and walked one in three batters faced.
