Krystal Lewallen carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and gave up just one hit as Northern Kentucky remained unbeaten on the season by knocking off St. Mary's 3-0 at the NCAA Division II national tournament in Salem, Va.
Northern Kentucky will face Lynn on Sunday, with the winner advancing to Monday's national championship game. St. Mary's will have to fight their way through the loser's bracket, beginning with a 2:30 p.m. matchup Saturday against San Francisco State.
The Norse scored all three runs in an odd sequence in the fifth inning. No ball left the infield as Heather Cotner led off with a walk followed by Becky Napier's infield single. Sara Becker slapped into the first of two Rattler errors in the inning to score Cotner from second base.
St. Mary's Brittany Brown then struck out Rachele Vogelpohl, but a wild pitch allowed not only Vogelpohl to reach first, but Napier to score from third. Ricki Rothbauer hit into another error, that scored pinch runner Michelle Logan for the third unearned run of the inning.
The Rattlers tried to answer in the sixth, when pinch hitter Sarah Cooper delivered St. Mary's lone hit of the game. Cooper stole second, but Lewallen retired the side to end the threat.
