St. Thomas (Minn.) 4, Chapman 1

May 22, 2005

Raleigh, NC St. Thomas used a strong opening inning to jump up early on the Chapman Panthers here at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday evening. The Tommies went on to defeat Chapman 41 to give them a chance to defend their 2004 National Championship on Monday.

St. Thomas jumped on top early when Michelle Wong squeezed a single through in the first inning, knocking in Nikki Conway to give the Tommies a 1-0 lead. They did not stop there. Wong would later score on an infield error to put St. Thomas up 2-0. Carrie Embree then used a single to drive home another run and complete a three run first inning.

Our bats just came alive, everyone was getting it done Embree stated.

The lead would hold up even though Chapman showed some scoring ability in the bottom half of the first inning. Infielder Kim Sanders stepped up with bases loaded to drive in a run with a single, but that was all the Panthers could muster in the inning even though they had bases loaded with one out.

What was expected to be a pitching battle did not live up to the billing in the first inning. Neither starting pitcher made it out of the opening stanza, but both relievers did what was necessary, by giving up only one run throughout the remaining six innings. St. Thomas Maria Bye and Chapmans Jennifer Winford answered the call.

As always I just threw the ball where coach told me to. He is so knowledgeable about every batter Bye said of her 6.2 innings pitched.

Chapman threatened in the fourth inning, but left two runners on base in scoring position. The Panthers left a total of eight runners on base in the losing effort. The loss for the Panthers moves them into a consolation game versus the winner of the Ithaca and Salisbury game on Monday with a trip to the championship game on the line.

St. Thomas moved to 42-6 on the season and will try to become the first repeat NCAA division III softball champions since 1985-1986 when Eastern Connecticut State accomplished the feat. The Tommies will take on the winner of Mondays early game between Chapman and the winner of the Ithaca/Salisbury match up. With a win on Monday afternoon, St. Thomas can wrap up the title. Coming from the championship side of the bracket means that the Tommies have to be beaten twice for any other team to claim the national title.

Side Notes:
St. Thomas head coach, John Tschida earned his 400th career win with the victory over Chapman.
I really didnt pay attention to it. The girls told me about it. Said the modest coach.
