February 6, 2009-The #25 Emporia State softball team split their season opening doubleheader at #18 Colorado School of Mines, winning the first game 8-4 in eight innings and falling in the nightcap 7-4 in Golden, Colo.

Jenna Potter's bases loaded double in the top of the eighth inning was the game winner in the 8-4 victory in the opener for the Hornets.  The Orediggers loaded the bases on the bottom of the eighth, before ESU got out of the inning on Miranda Campbell's throw to the plate from third base for the first out. The game ended on a double play line out to Linda Ketter at second who threw to first to get the runner off base.

Potter was two for five with three RBI and a run scored while Nicole Bergley was one for four with a three RBI double in the sixth.  All-American Miranda Campbell was two for five with an RBI as well.  Megan Dennis picked up the win, allowing four runs on ten hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings.

ESU led 4-3 going into the bottom of the sixth in the nightcap before CSM scored four runs on four hits with an error in the bottom of the frame for a 7-4 win.  The Hornets trailed 3-1 going into the top of the sixth when Jennifer Dace and Campbell led off with back to back doubles.  Aubree Brattin walked and Jill Peters reached on an infield single to load the bases and Abby Smith gave ESU the lead with a single to right.

Jennifer Heerey took the loss, giving up five earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and six walks.  Campbell was two for three with an RBI and run scored.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday in a double header scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (CT) in Golden, Colo.
