BOSTON - The Boston University softball team's offense was on fire as it defeated Massachusetts, 10-4, on Saturday evening in the NCAA Regional elimination game. Junior April Setterlund went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI in the Terriers' first win over the Minutewomen since 1996. Junior Caitlin Rentler was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and sophomore Emily Roesch connected on two hits of her own.

The last time BU defeated UMass was in the 1996 NCAA Regional in Storrs, Conn. BU and UMass were on the brink of elimination; however, the Terriers advanced to their first NCAA Regional final appearance in program history with a 1-0 win. Additionally, it is the most runs over the Minutewomen since April 2, 1994 - a 10-2 victory.

Senior Cassidi Hardy started the game in the pitcher's circle and went 3.2 innings with four strikeouts, four runs - three earned - and two walks. Rookie Whitney Tuthill came into the game in relief and picked up the win, allowing just two hits the rest of the way.

In all, the Terriers connected on nine hits. Senior Rachel Moeller went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a sacrifice hit. One of Setterlund's two hits was for extra bases as she drilled her 19th double of the season.

The Terriers came out of the gates firing on all cylinders with four runs on two hits, beginning with Setterlund's stand-up double into left center that plated senior Rachel Hebert. It tacked on one more run when Moeller laid down a bunt as sophomore Erica Casacci hustled down the line to reach home and beat out the throw. Setterlund continued the scoring, coming home on a sacrifice fly out by Tuthill, and Moeller rounded out the first-inning rout, taking advantage of a wild pitch.

The Minutewomen rallied in the third, drawing to within one run as they connected on three hits for three runs. UMass' Katie Bettencourt drove in the first run on a single to shortstop and Carly Normandin advanced Teea Rogers home with a sacrifice fly out. Bettencourt continued the comeback when she scored off a single to right center; however, Hardy recorded a strikeout to get out of the frame.

In the third inning, the Terriers again took a four-run advantage as Setterlund jumpstarted it when she scored on an RBI single from Moeller, who found the hole between second and third. In the next at-bat, Rentler plated Roesch and Moeller on an opposite field single, as she drove it through the right side.

The Minutewomen were awarded a run on an illegal pitch in the fourth as the bases were loaded, pushing a run home and moving the score to 7-4. With the bases loaded and two outs, Valdes made an outstanding catch in the outfield with the bases loaded to get out of the top of the fourth.

In the fifth inning, BU tacked on three more and stretched the lead to five runs, 10-4, as Roesch and Moeller crossed home on a single and a wild pitch, respectively, and Rentler touched the fourth bag on a fielder's choice.

BU and LIU will face off in approximately a half hour. The winner will advance to the NCAA Regional final with No. 10 Arizona State.
