May 22, 2010
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Vanessa James was 3-for-3 to help lead the University of Louisville to a 5-1 win over Ball State in an elimination game of the Knoxville Regional Saturday afternoon. U of L (40-18) will face Virginia at approximately 6:45 p.m. in another elimination game. Ball State closes its season at 43-16.
Ball State got to work quickly when Jessie Ware and Lisa Rozanski opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles. A play at the plate from right fielder Vanessa James to catcher Melissa Roth on Alicia Barkley's single cut down Ware for the first out of the inning, but placed runners at second and third for Amanda Carpenter's sacrifice fly which scored Rozanski to put BSU on the board.
Louisville answered in the top of the third when James led off the frame with a double to the centerfield wall and scored on Melissa Roth's one-out double to the same spot to make it a 1-1 game.
U of L added another run in the fourth when Jordan Trimble reached on an error, took second on Colby Wherry's sacrifice bunt an scored on Alicja Wolny's RBI single to pull ahead 2-1.
The (Louisville) Cardinals extended the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the top of the seventh. Jennifer Esteban reached on an error to start the inning and took second on James' base hit. Kristin Austin's sacrifice bunt was misplayed to send Esteban home and place runners on second and third. Roth was intentionally walked to load the bases. James was out on a force play at the plate when Bemis reached on a fielder's choice. Timble's sacrifice fly plated Austin and Wherry followed with an RBI double to make it a 5-1 game.
Ball State threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh when Alyssa Collins led off the inning with a single to centerfield, but was thrown out at second while trying to stretch it into a double for the first out of the inning. Kate Wilczynski followed with a double and moved to third on Amanda Montalto's groundout. Meredith Nash drew a walk to place runners on the corners with two outs. Louisville's Tori Collins struck out Sadie Robertson to get the win.
Tori Collins (18-5) got the win, allowing one earned run on seven hits and striking out six in seven innings.
Barkley and Ware each had a pair of hits for Ball State. Elizabeth Milian (32-7) took the loss, giving up five runs, only one earned, on eight hits and striking out four in seven innings.
