SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly was selected as the favorite to capture its third conference crown in five years when results of the Big West Preseason Coaches Poll were released on Tuesday.

The Mustangs (23-24, 12-9 Big West), who feature senior designated player and reigning Big West Field Player of the Year Anna Cahn, received 54 total points and three first-place votes to edge defending conference co-champion UC Davis (26-29, 15-6). The Aggies, the Big West’s lone NCAA Tournament representative last season, received 51 points and three first-place votes. Cal State Northridge (31-22, 15-6), which split last year’s Big West title with UC Davis, earned 41 points to finish third in the poll.

“It’s an honor to be chosen first in the poll by our peers. The voting was very tight, which is how we see the conference title race playing out,” said seventh-year Cal Poly coach Jenny Condon, who returns five position starters to compliment eight freshmen players. “We're excited to get out on the field next week and have some games under our belt. We plan to represent the Big West well during our challenging non-conference schedule.”

Cal Poly, which finished third in the Big West standings last season, opens the 2011 campaign against No. 23 Oklahoma State on Friday, Feb. 11 at Arizona State’s Kajikawa Classic. Of Cal Poly’s 33 non-conference games before its April 2 Big West-opening doubleheader at UC Riverside, 17 contests will come against opposition ranked in the preseason USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll.
