Jefferson City, Mo. -- No. 16 Emporia State swept Lincoln on Friday afternoon to move to 28-7 on the season and 9-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets took the first game 7-3 and then run-ruled the Blue Tigers 11-0 in five innings in the second game.

ESU scored six unearned runs in the matinee on the way to the 7-3 win in a game that had a combined 13 errors. The Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Abby Hughes got two of the RBI with a sac fly and a ground out. The Blue Tigers responded with three unearned runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 3-3.

Andrea Piezuch put ESU back on top with a two out, two RBI single in the top of the sixth inning and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. The final run for ESU came in the top of the seventh when Jessica Brewer doubled, stole third and came home on a fielder’s choice and error by the LU catcher.

Piezuch was two for three with two runs scored and two RBI while Hughes had two RBI without getting a hit. Karley Schmelzer won her tenth straight decision in the circle. She went the distance three runs, none of them earned, on three hits with five strikeouts.

The Hornets broke out the bats in the second game, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits in the five inning game. ESU scored in each of the five innings, starting with Angela Mahan’s lead off home run in the first inning. The Hornets put three on the board in the second with Mahan delivering a two RBI single. Mahan made it three straight innings with an RBI when she hit a sac fly in the third for one of two runs in that inning. Katie Huffman delivered a three run homer in the fourth to make it 9-0 ESU and Amanda Self put the finishing touches on with a two run home run in the fifth.

Jennifer Heerey and Lauren Sharp combined for the four hit shutout in the circle. Heerey went 4.0 innings giving up all four hits with two strike outs while Sharp pitched a perfect fifth to wrap up the game. Offensively, Mahan was three for three with four RBI and two runs scored. Huffman was one for two with three RBI and Taylor Riechard went two for two with three runs scored.
