Bloomsburg wins with late rally
Young’s RBI single scored game-winning run
BLOOMSBURG -- Emily Young’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Sam Pientack with the game-winning run to lift Bloomsburg to a 2-1 win against Shippensburg in the opening game of the 2011 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championships.
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth Pientack singled to center leading off the inning against Shippensburg starter Emily Estep. Jenna Hampton was then hit by a pitch putting runners at first and second. Mandy Leach then bunted the runners to second and third. Lori Neyhard then lined a shot that second baseman Hope Cornell went up and grabbed for the second out. Young then lined a single to center scoring Pientack with the go-ahead score. After Raychelle Kuhns walked to load the bases, Estep retired Lacy Mauro to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh Shippensburg’s Marygrace Serra walked with one out. Pinch-runner Abby Payne moved to second on a bunt, but was stranded there when Huskies starter Shavaun Fisher (17-5) got a strikeout to end the game.
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Pientack got to second after a swinging bunt that was thrown away by the Lady Raiders catcher Meg Lehman. After a strikeout, Leach singled to right field scoring Pientack with the game’s first run.
Shippensburg tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth. Moira Johnsen singled to lead off the inning. After a single and walk loaded the bases, Meg Lehman singled scoring pinch-runner Kiersten Darhower with the tying run setting up the Huskies late inning rally.
Fisher allowed just four hits in the game while walking five and striking out eight to earn the win. Estep, now 15-3, walked three and fanned two, in a losing effort.
The Huskies go to 31-7 with the win, while Shippensburg falls to 28-14 with the loss.
