TEMPE, Ariz. -- Kaitlin Inglesby hit a two-run homer in the first inning as No. 12 Washington defeated No. 21 Nebraska 4-0 in the season opener for both squads at the Tempe Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.

"Overall it was a well played game," Washington head coach Heather Tarr said. "Defensively we played as expected and offensively we had several opportunities to score runs against a very good pitcher in Haggeman."

Inglesby picked up her third RBI of the game in the third inning and Taylor Smith drove in the final run of the game with a RBI single later in the frame for the Huskies.

Inglesby also had a solid game on the mound, allowing just two hits. She compiled five strikeouts and two walks on the afternoon while tossing a complete game shutout.

Kimi Pohlman walked three times in the game while Shawna Wright hit the first double of the season and Whitney Jones had the first stolen base of the year for the Huskies.

Inglesby nearly hit a grand slam with the bases loaded late in the game but her blast was caught at the fence in left field.

Five players made their collegiate debuts in the game for Washington as Kimberlee Souza, Kylee Lahners and Courtney Gano all earned starts in the infield and made key defensive plays throughout the game. Kelli Suguro entered to pinch run for Wright to make her first appearance as a Husky as well.
