Texas-Tyler stays perfect with sweep
Thomason’s 12th RBI of year leads Patriots past Southwestern
TYLER, Texas -- No. 2 Texas-Tyler improved its season record to 6-0 with a double-header sweep of Southwestern 3-1 and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UT Tyler Ballpark. Southwestern dropped to 4-6 with the losses.
In game 1, the Patriots struck first in the opening inning when Lauren Robenalt scored on a double steal to make the score 1-0 early. UT Tyler added two more runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to make the score 3-0.
In the third, Katelyn Thomason singled in Carli Wheeler for her 12th RBI of the season. Kellen Gomez then scored in the fourth inning on an error by Southwestern first baseman Haley Hughes.
The Pirates were able to get on the board in the fifth inning on a single by Amanda Ambrose that scored Karen Ramirez. But that would be all Southwestern could manufacture.
Patriots starter Heather Abshire pitched the complete game, giving up eight hits, one run, registering seven strikeouts.
In game 2, UT Tyler exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second inning, blasting its way to a 8-0 win. The Patriots earned two runs in the inning on a throwing error by Pirates shortstop Ambrose, allowing Whitney Burt and Ashley Endsley to score. Joey Cronin then added three more runs to the board, blasting her second home run of the season, a three-run job to make it 6-0 UT Tyler.
The Patriots added two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Cronin scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning add ended the game with a single to shortstop which would score Carli Wheeler to end the game by run rule in the sixth.
Thomason pitched a flawless game to get the win, pitching 6.0 shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out 11 batters.
On the day, Southwestern committed eight errors while scoring just one run.
Cronin finished the double-header going 4 for 7, with four RBI and two runs scored.
