Winona State wins tournament opener
Struzynski pitches three-hit shutout to down Colorado Christian
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Stacey Struzynski threw a three-hit shutout and Britt Stewart hit an RBI single in the sixth inning as No. 15 Winona State beat Colorado Christian 1-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Regional tournament.
The matchup settled into a pitcher’s duel early, with the two teams combining for seven hits in the contest.
Neither team could push a run across until the sixth inning, with Molly Link scoring what would prove to be the winning run. Link walked with one out in the inning and advanced to second as Kim Wachholder reached on an error. Kathy Crudo hit into a fielder’s choice, putting runners on the corners for Stewart. Stewart came through with a RBI single, scoring Link to give the Warriors the victory.
A nine-minute rain delay followed the sixth, with Struzynski setting CCU down to secure the win after play resumed. Struzynski scattered just three hits on the game, striking out three while walking none. Struzynski is now 23-6 on the season.
The Warriors had chances to score early in the game, getting a leadoff single from Brooke Piotrowski in the first. Piotrowski advanced to third on an error but couldn’t get across the plate. Link was thrown out trying to score on a ball that got away from CCU’s third baseman in the fourth.
Stewart had two of WSU’s hits on the game, with Link and Piotrowski also connecting for base hits.
