Valdosta State grabs last berth
Blazers reach Super Regional as Johnson knocks in lone run
VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Valdosta State's Courtney Gunby registered her first solo shutout of the season to improve to 9-0 as she led the top-ranked team in the country to a 1-0 win Monday morning. Morgan Johnson knocked the winning RBI in the third inning to help VSU advance, as it will now host Florida Southern in the Super Regional at the VSU Softball Complex.
Each team notched four hits in the game, but it was Johnson's hit through the left side that score April Collins, pinch running for Angela O'Connor after O'Connor walked. Collins advanced to second on a single from April Hutchens and went to third on Courtney Albritton's fielder's choice. Johnson knocked her in for the only run of the year.
In both the fifth and sixth innings, Rollins had runners at third but the VSU defense held strong. In the fifth, Veronica Alred was at second when Hannah Lovestrand hit a deep bomb into right center field. Clare Wamsley made the running catch heading into the fence to rob Lovestrand, then made the throw to the infield to hold Alred at third. The next play was a groundout to end the inning.
Runners were at the corners in the top of the sixth for Rollins and Wamsley made another catch in right field to keep the run from crossing the plate.
When Rollins was making a comeback bid in the top of the seventh, Albritton made another theft. Alred led off with a deep hit to centerfield but Albritton, despite running into the fence, made the catch to take away a second possible homer from Rollins and secure the win.
