St. Edward's gets out to quick start, beats No. 7 Indy

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- In a battle of Super Regional participants from last season, St. Edward's raced out to an 8-1 lead and hung on to defeat Indianapolis 8-4 Sunday morning in the final game of the 2014 Charger Chill Out at the Kiwanis Metro Sports Plex.

Indianapolis (2-3) opened the game with a run in the first inning. The Greyhounds started with a double and a single. After a stolen base and an infield single loaded the bases, a sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game.

St. Edward's (6-4) was held in check for the first two innings. In the third inning, the Hilltoppers finally broke through. Emily Mayfield led off with a walk and advanced to third on a bunt single by Kaci Olson. Alex Mayfield followed with a double to right field to score Emily Mayfield and move Olson to third base. Cydney Ervin followed with a single to right field to score Olson and move Mayfield to third. Ervin also took second on the throw home. Kendall Lucas loaded the bases by drawing a walk and Faith Roberts picked up an RBI with a walk of her own to make it 3-1.

The Hilltoppers added to the lead in the fourth inning when Catie Carney led off the inning with a home run down the left field line that got out in a hurry. It was her second home run of the tournament. Emily Mayfield reached with a walk, and after two consecutive sacrifice bunts by St. Edward's, Ervin singled her home with two outs to make it 5-1.

St. Edward's added three more runs in the fifth inning when Carney doubled home pinch runner Breah Whitten and Emily Mayfield singled home Carney and Marisa Bogart to make it 8-1.

Indianapolis would make it interesting in the seventh inning when they plated three runs, but St. Edward's hung on for the victory.

Debrow (2-3) picked up the victory, allowing four runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out five batters in her complete game.
