DENTON, Texas -- Texas Woman's senior Katie Hines broke the TWU career home run record with her 51st long ball and later pitched a complete-game shutout to help the No. 25 Pioneers to a doubleheader sweep against Tarleton State. TWU captured a 3-1 victory in Game 1 and an 8-0 run-rule win in Game 2.
Senior Brandie Lander pitched a complete game in the first game for her 20th win of the season. She allowed one run while striking out 10 batters.
Tarleton State jumped out a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out home run. The Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior Bailey Vrazel scored the first run on a passed ball before Hines brought home the second run on a squeeze play. TWU added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Samantha Alegria.
In the second game, Hines allowed four hits while striking out six batters for her ninth win of the season. She also drove in four runs on offense including a three-run home run in the second. It was Hinesâ 10th long ball of the season and 51st of her career breaking Jordan Readickerâs career record (50).
The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Hines and freshman Alyssa Galaz and RBI sacrifice fly by junior Sarah Wittenburg. TWU made it 6-0 in the second on Hinesâ three-run shot. The Pioneers closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth on RBI double by Vrazel and RBI single by Galaz.
