Long ball leads No. 16 Georgia to 5-1 win vs. No. 10 Kentucky

ATHENS, Ga. -- Alex Hugo, Tina Iosefa and Katie Browne each hit a homer to lead the No. 16 Bulldogs in a 5-1 win against the No. 10 Wildcats. With the win, the Bulldogs recorded their 40th victory of the season to improve to 40-12 and 13-9 in the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky is now 41-12 overall and 13-9 in league play.

Chelsea Wilkinson got start and the win for the Bulldogs, throwing her 20th complete game of the year. The win was her 25th of the season as she moves to 25-7 on the campaign. She allowed just one run on four hits and struck out ten batters in her complete game performance. Lauren Cumbess received her first loss of the season as she dropped to 10-1 on the year. Cumbess pitched only one inning of work, allowing three runs on two hits and one walk. Shannon Smith came in as relief and threw the final five innings, gave up two runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking six.

Georgia notched five hits, but three of them were long balls. Hugo and Browne each hit two-run homers, while Iosefa had a solo shot. Samantha LaZear had the other two hits for the Bulldogs.

Georgia opened the game with power as Alex Hugo and Tina Iosefa hit back-to-back home runs in the first. Hugo's two-run dinger left the park in a hurry as it shot out to dead center. Iosefa's solo shot took more of an arcing route and landed amongst the trees beyond the left centefield fence.

Georgia threatened to extend their lead in the fifth, but failed to score after loading the bases with two outs. LaZear led off the inning with a slap single up the middle, two batters later Geri Ann Glasco walked, then after a Hugo pop out, Iosefa walked as well, Kaylee Puailoa then ended the inning as she was called out on a check swing strike out.

Browne extended the Georgia lead when she cranked a sixth inning two-run homer. The four-bagger put the tally at 5-0, as it flew approximately 30 feet over the left field foul pole.

With one out in the seventh, Kentucky finally got on the board when Emily Gaines broke up Wilkinson's shutout with a solo home run over the right field wall. Wilkinson then put down the next two Wildcat batters in order to finish off the complete game.
