Louisiana Lafayette combines for 44 runs in sweep of Appalachian State
BOONE, N.C. -- Lexie Elkins went a combined 8-for-10 at the plate with five home runs and 13 RBIs and No. 9 Louisiana Lafayette belted a combined 13 home runs as it earned a doubleheader sweep of Appalachian State in Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
In the opener, Elkins went 4-for-5 with three home runs and six RBIs while Samantha Walsh homered twice in a 21-5 victory in five innings. Elkins followed her Game 1 performance in the nightcap as she went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs in a 23-6 contest.
Louisiana (34-5, 17-3 Sun Belt) scored in eight of 10 innings played in its first meeting against Appalachian State (12-28, 1-19 Sun Belt), including a combined 25 runs in the fifth inning of the twinbill. The Ragin' Cajuns built a 21-2 lead in the opener after scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning before erupting for 14 runs in the nightcap after the Mountaineers got to within 9-6 after four.
Haley Hayden went a combined 5-for-10 in the doubleheader with seven RBIs and six runs scored.
