Miners Close Weekend At Mizzou With Fourth Place Finish

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Missouri S&T’s swimming team wrapped up its weekend Sunday at the Mizzou Invitational by finishing fourth in the six-team competition and with a total of 12 automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Championships in March.
S&T’s highest individual finish Sunday came from Zlatan Hamzic, as he lowered his seasonal-best time in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.12 to take second in the event.
Andrew Schranck placed third in the 200-yard butterfly as he also posted a time below the NCAA automatic standard of 1:50.89. He finished one spot ahead of Phil Arve, who made the automatic mark earlier in the weekend in a time trial and finished fourth Sunday in 1:52.14.
S&T’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Schranck, Hamilton Vernon, Sean Deegan and David Sanchez-Turner also took fourth in that event as it posted a time of 3:05.06.
The Miners got a fifth place showing from Zach Lemons in the 200-yard breaststroke as he posted a mark of 2:05.35 that also fell below the NCAA’s automatic standard in the event. S&T’s David Sanchez-Turner also took fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.33 seconds
Andrew Trowbridge placed sixth in the 1,650-yard freestyle, an event he had already reached the automatic qualifying standard in, with a time of 16:04.26.
Jeff Enge posted an eighth place performance in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:51.55; he had a time of 1:50.98 in the preliminaries that fell under the automatic qualifying mark. Vernon also finished eighth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.36 seconds.
S&T took fourth in the team standings with a total of 476 points, beating out Arizona State and North Dakota along the way. Missouri captured the team title by over 300 points over Drury with Southern Illinois finishing third with 566 points over the three days.
The Miners, who entered the weekend meet with two automatic qualifiers in tow in Hamzic and Trowbridge, added nine on Friday and one more on Saturday to give them 12 current qualifiers for the meet that will take place in Canton, Ohio, beginning March 10.
Missouri S&T's next meet will take place after the holiday break at the same location when it takes on Missouri in a dual meet on Jan. 9.
