HOUSTON -- Kenyon College won two relay events and the Ladies Danielle Arad won the 500-yard freestyle, pacing Kenyon to a commanding lead in the team race after the first day of the 26th annual NCAA Division III Womens Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Houstons Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Kenyon totaled 190 points after six opening-day events for an 85-point lead over second-place Amherst College. Calvin College (104) is third and defending champion Emory is in fourth place (100).
Kaitlyn Orstein of Washington and Jefferson set the first meet record of the championships with her 2:03.13 time in the 200-yard individual medley. The previous mark was 2:013.14 by Williams Lindsay Payne in 2006.
In the one-meter springboard diving event, first-place Erica Deur of Calvin (487.0) and second-place Doria Holbrook of MIT (470.10) both surpassed the previous record of 455.20 set by Concordias Anne Cullen in 2006.
The Division III womens championships, hosted by the University of Houston and the Harris Country-Houston Sports Authority, continues through Saturday. The Division III mens championships will be held March 15-17, also at the UH Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
