LONG BEACH, Calif. –
Eight schools made the trip to Long Beach, Calif., for the Pac-10 Championships which began Wednesday night with two relay events.

Michaela Ahlin, Talor Whitaker, Emma Neely and Jennifer Dean highlighted the night when they set a school record in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:20.31.

The WSU team of Rugile Mileisyte, Shawna Keller, Ahlin and Whitaker finished eighth in the 200 medley relay. The veteran quartet touched the wall in a time of 1:41.40. The Cougars’ second team consisted of Shelbi Luchini, Jessie Craig, Evelina Bieleckaite and Jenna Bekker finished in 1:43.85. Every competitor who swam in the medley relay bested, or matched their lifetime-best split.

“Our 800 free relays got off with a lot of speed,” said WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. “We need to go out in those 200's with a bit more easy speed and we'll be in a better position to finish off our races.”

Competition will resume tomorrow with the preliminary session beginning at 11 a.m. and the finals session beginning at 6 p.m.
