May 6, 2005

SAVANNAH, Ga. The GC&SU men completed a dual sweep of action in the first round of the 2005 Mid-Atlantic Men's Tennis Region, joining their women's team in the championship match by downing Francis Marion, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at the Bacon Park Tennis Complex in Savannah, Ga.

The Bobcats will face host Armstrong Atlantic State in the final on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., with a berth in the Round of 16 on the line.

GC&SU got off to a good start by sweeping all three doubles matches, including a key win at No. 1 doubles from Neil Scantlebury and Rodrigo Yamauti, 9-7, over Chatwinder Singh and Kevin Taylor. The Bobcats would need all three points when singles play rolled around.

Francis Marion battled back at the top as Kevin Taylor blitzed Scantlebury, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while doubles mate Chatwinder Singh defeated Eric Siquiera, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, to bring the match to 3-2. GC&SU won at No. 6 singles behind Marciano Cebrian, but FMU won at No. 5 singles behind Daniel Coupek, making the score 4-3. Yamauti came through in a third set, however, downing Franklyn Emmanuel, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the match.

The winner of the Mid-Atlantic Region earns one of 16 berths in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May 11-14.
