#1 West Florida 5, #33 Ferris State 1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.-- The #1 West Florida men's tennis team took down #35 Ferris State by the score of 5-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Division II National Championships. In a match that started at 10:30 a.m. the Argonauts, the defending national champions, went ahead 2-1 after doubles competition before a three-hour rain delay at Sanlando Park that suspended play on the singles courts.

In a battle of some of the nation's best, West Florida's Paulius Jurkenas and Mario Vergara, the third-ranked duo in the country, defeated 25th-ranked Jason Cole and Martin Hoch by the score of 8-3 at the top position. Diego Zorzi and German Dalmagro battled out a 9-8 (7-5) victory over Ferris State's Kyle Halberg and Mark Hammelman at the second spot. Cutting their deficit in half, the Bulldogs picked up their first point of the match at the No. 3 position as Francisco Gomez and Matthew Hill tussled Jonas Mouly and Nicolas Barrientos for a 9-7 win.

Half way through the singles competition, the rain showers covered the Altamonte Springs area as play was suspended until 4:45 p.m. Returning to action, 31st-ranked Vergara was victorious 6-0, 6-1 over Halberg for the Argonauts third point. Clinching the victory for West Florida ninth-ranked Mouly defeated Hoch 6-2, 6-1 at the second spot, while minutes later on the No. 5 court, Barrientos beat Gomez 6-3, 7-5 for the fifth team point.

West Florida, making its sixth NCAA appearance, advances to the quarterfinals tomorrow against #10 Drury at 10 a.m.
