#2 Barry 5, #30 Midwestern State 2

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.-The #2 Barry University men's tennis team fought its way past #30 Midwestern State by the score of 5-2 in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Winners of nine-straight matches, the Buccaneers (21-1) tallied victories at the top two doubles positions before winning three singles matches, propelling them into the NCAA Quarterfinals tomorrow where they will tangle with the Tigers of #11 Ouachita Baptist.

The sixth-ranked duo in the nation of Thomas Hipp and Patrick Rittenauer helped Barry get off to a successful start as they took down Gene Ligeon and Rohan Williams by the score of 8-3 at the top doubles position. Shortly after, Sebastian Losavio and Manuel Lauter, playing together for the first time all season after Martin Jensen was sidelined by an injury, pushed past Brett Emerson and Charles van Swelm by the score of 8-1 at the second position, giving the Bucs the 2-0 lead. Down 6-4, Barry's Victor Rodriguez and Alex Praderas fought back to force a tie-break at the third spot before falling short to Zac Dillard and Jared King 9-8 (7-5).

Taking their 2-1 advantage into singles action the Bucs quickly extended their lead as Losavio, the 11th-ranked player in the nation, breezed by Ligeon in straight-set 6-0, 6-2 victory. Ranked 41st in the country, Rittenauer got by Williams 6-2, 6-0 at the third spot for Barry's fourth team point. Cutting the lead, Midwestern State picked up a victory at the No. 6 spot as King blacked Alex Praderas, playing for Jensen, 6-0, 6-1. Clinching the victory for the Bucs, Rodriguez downed van Swelm at the fourth spot by the score of 6-1, 6-3.

The quarterfinal match with the Tigers is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow at Sanlando Park.
