COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The second ranked Virginia men's tennis team reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-0 win over No. 12 Washington Saturday afternoon in the round of 16 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The win advances Virginia into the quarterfinals, the farthest the Cavaliers have ever been in the NCAA Tournament.
The Virginia got an early jump on the doubles point as the No. 21 ranked team of Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) and Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) cruised past No. 18 ranked Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu 8-1 at the No. 1 position. The Cavaliers then clinched the point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles by Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), who defeated Andy Kuharsky and Mike Ricks.
The Cavaliers carried their momentum in the singles, winning the first set in five of the six matches. Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) needed little time to extend the UVa advantage to 2-0 as he dispatched of Chu 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. That lead increased to 3-0 when Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) defeated Christoph Palmanshofer 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) clinched the match for the Cavaliers when he topped Pete Scharler 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
With the victory, Virginia (27-2) advances to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The win also extended Virginia's school record win streak to 16 consecutive matches. Washington finishes the season with a 20-5 record.
"We came out really strong today and winning the doubles point gave us a lot of momentum," said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. "I thought we did a good job in singles of maintaining our focus and finishing our matches. We look forward to playing UCLA tomorrow."
The Cavaliers will play No. 6 UCLA in the quarterfinals Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (CT). UCLA downed Tennessee 4-1 on Saturday in the round of 16. Virginia defeated the Bruins 4-2 earlier this season in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament in Chicago.
