COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team is back in the championship match of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season after defeating the University of Florida Gators, 4-1, in Monday's semifinal match at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. Baylor will face UCLA, who they defeated for the NCAA title last season, at 6 p.m. (CDT) on Tuesday.
Baylor's victory raises its season record to 33-0 and extends its win streak to 57 matches. The 3rd-ranked Gators finish their season at 24-6. UCLA, the tournament's No. 7 seed, advanced to the finals with a 4-2 win over third-seeded and 4th-ranked Mississippi.
Benjamin Becker and Jon Reckewey won their fourth match without a loss in the 2005 NCAA Tournament on court No. 3. The tandem defeated Florida's Nestor Briceno and Stef Tell, 8-6. On court one, Benedikt Dorsch and Matiga Zgaga gained the doubles point for the Bears with an 8-3 win over 8th-ranked Hamid Mirzadeh and Greg Ouellette. When play was suspended the Bears were leading on court two, Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke were up 6-2.
Baylor quickly raised its lead to 3-0 when Becker posted a quick 6-4, 6-3 win over Ouellette on court two and Dorsch beat Mirzadeh 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot. Florida won first sets on three courts (3, 5, 6) but on court three Poerschke rallied to take the second set and Zgaga, playing at the No. 5 spot, took set two as well. The Gators gained their only point of the night when Ryan Sherry posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over BU's Greg Shearer on court six. Michal Kokta extended his win streak to 14 matches and clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-4, 7-6(6) win over Briceno at the No. 4 spot. He is now 35-9 on the season including a school record 27 dual match wins. Becker's win was his 11th straight and Dorsch posted his sixth consecutive victory.
"I don't think 4-1 was reflective of the competitiveness of the match. They played us extremely tough. We were down in several of the matches that didn't finish and the No. 6 singles had just come off the court. I feel fortunate to win. We lost some first sets today. We have to dial in from the beginning (in Tuesday's final). If we do that we will have a chance," said head coach Matt Knoll.
In last season's championship match, the Bears posted a 4-0 victory over UCLA. UCLA returns five of its six singles players from last season while Baylor returns three players (Dorsch, Becker, Zgaga). Benjamin Becker, Matija Zgaga and former Bear Matias Marin all posted singles victories for BU against UCLA in that match.
