TULSA, Okla. – No. 2 Texas (1-0) dropped the doubles point but rallied with four singles wins to claim a tight 4-3 season-opening victory over No. 13 Tulsa (2-1) at TU’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane assumed an early 1-0 lead after claiming two of three singles matches to secure the doubles point. Tulsa’s fourth-ranked duo of Arnau Brugues and Philip Stephens knocked off UT sophomores Kellen Damico and Ed Corrie at first doubles, 8-6, and the Hurricane’s Alberto Sottocorno and Ashley Watling dealt Texas’ Miguel Reyes Varela and Jon Wiegand a 9-7 defeat at the third slot. Texas scored a victory at second doubles, where juniors Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala posted an 8-4 win over Ross Cunningham and Victor Kolik.
Damico evened the tally for Texas with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Tulsa’s Sottocorno at fourth singles. The Golden Hurricane took the lead once more, as Brugues posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kutrovsky at first singles. Reyes Varela evened the score once more, as he tallied a 6-1, 6-4 win over Watling at fifth singles. Tulsa’s Stephens posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Texas junior Olivier Sajous at third singles before Texas rallied with two more wins to nail down the victory.
UT’s Corrie split his first two sets with Tulsa’s Kolik at second singles, and he ran away with the final set, 6-1, to even the match at three points apiece. Texas’ Zavala forced a third set in his match against Tulsa’s Cunningham, and he prevailed in the third set, 6-3, to secure the team victory for the Longhorns.
“This was a very tough opening match to come here and play Tulsa indoors,” UT coach Michael Center said. “Tulsa played a great match. We had our backs against the wall and showed a lot of fight to get the win. It was great effort down the stretch.”
Texas resumes play on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Florida State.
