MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 9 West Florida men's tennis team (11-8, 3-1 GSC) took fifth place in the Small College Blue-Gray Tournament hosted by Auburn Montgomery at Lagoon Park on April 2-4. The tournament featured many ranked teams, including NAIA No. 9 Lindsey Wilson, No. 2 Valdosta State, No. 5 Armstrong-Atlantic, No. 16 Columbus State, No. 20 Abilene Christian, and No. 27 North Alabama. The Argonauts went 2-1 in the weekend, falling to Columbus State and defeating Abilene Christian on Friday and then topping Lindsey Wilson on Saturday.

The Argonauts started the tournament facing No. 16 Columbus State in the quarterfinal round on Thursday April 2 at 4:00 pm. However, both teams were only able to play doubles as rain postponed the singles matches to the next day at 8:00 a.m. The Argonauts dropped the match 5-4 and moved to the consolation bracket. UWF dropped the lead in doubles, as the Cougars won in the second and third spots. In the first doubles Kevin Ducros (freshman/Aix-en-Provence, France) and Andrey Pozhidaev (freshman/Sochi, Russia) defeated Cougars No. 16 Frank Suarez and Luis Gonzales 9-8 in a comeback fashion. Both teams then split in singles, winning three matches each. Ducros defeated No. 23 Suarez in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. Argonauts also earned two more wins with Patrick Bateman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) and Nathan Rosenfeld (freshman/Miami, Fla.) in the third and sixth spots respectively.

West Florida faced No. 20 Abilene Christian on Friday in the first match of the consolation bracket. The Argonauts earned a 7-2 win over the Wildcats to win their tenth match of the 2009 season. West Florida got a 3-0 lead after doubles, getting two easy wins at the first and second spots and a 9-8 win in the third with Nathan Rosenfeld and Mike Lue (freshman/Richmond Hill, Ontario). In singles the Argos earned wins in the first and second spots, dropped the following two singles, and earned two more wins in the remaining singles. With the win the Argonauts improved to 10-8 overall record and were set to fight for fifth place.

West Florida faced NAIA No. 9 Lindsey Wilson on Saturday and came out with a 7-2 win. Once again the Argonauts came out strong in doubles and earned the three points of the doubles play entering the singles action. In singles the Argonauts only dropped a match in the first spot when Ducros fell in straight sets to Freddy Luciani, and in the third spot when Jose Ycaza (senior/Guayaquil, Ecuador) retired from the match when the score was 6-4, 4-1 down. With the win, the Argonauts improved to a 11-8 overall record and went 2-1 in the weekend.

West Florida will now face Division I New Orleans on April 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex in Pensacola. The Argonauts will play their last few home matches on the regular season before the Gulf South Conference Championships coming up on April 18-19.
