Washburn Slips Past Southwest Baptist
ABILENE -- One of sports oldest adages is that it's almost impossible to beat the same team three times in one season.
Washburn University, however, proved there were some exceptions to that rule Thursday with its third 5-4 win over Southwest Baptist University this season. The Ichabods' win in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Men's Tournament semifinals sends WU into Friday's 10 a.m. championship against ACU, the top team in the region and the 19th-ranked team in the nation.
Washburn's Yann Kasay led SBU's Jorge Palacios 6-1, 5-2 and was serving to win the match, but he lost the last five games of the second set as Palacios forced a third set. Kasay won the third set to win the match for Washburn, which improved to 13-5 with the win while Southwest Baptist finished its season at 15-9.
