COLUMBUS, Ohio - After competition was moved indoors because of inclement weather, the No. 3-seed Ohio State men's tennis team advanced to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Championships with a 4-0 win against Xavier Friday at The Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. The Buckeyes (32-1; 10-0 Big Ten) face No. 35 Michigan at noon Saturday for a chance to move on to the Round of 16 in College Station, Texas, hosted by Texas A&M University.
Ohio State improves its win streak to 24-consecutive matches this season, while shutting out 17 of its last 24 opponents. The Buckeyes improve to a perfect 8-0 all-time against Xavier and hold a 16-3 all-time record against teams from the Atlantic 10. The Buckeyes defeated the Musketeers, 7-0, Jan. 21 in Columbus to begin the dual-match season.
In NCAA action, under 10th-year head coach Ty Tucker, Ohio State has an 18-9 overall record, advancing as far as the quarterfinals in 2004, '06, '07 and '08.
The final match point belonged to 6-foot-7 sophomore Matt Allare at No. 4 singles. Allare defeated Richard Canelas, 6-4, 6-1, improving his 2009 record to 31-2. The second-year Buckeye has now won 28-consecutive matches this season, which is the longest by any active member on the Scarlet and Gray squad.
In doubles, Allare and Justin Kronauge improved to 13-5 overall with an 8-1 victory against Doug Matthews and Chris Herrlinger at No. 1 doubles. The Buckeye duo needed just 25 minutes to secure the win. At No. 2 doubles, Chase Buchanan and Steven Moneke downed Ra'ees Ismail and JT Torbeck, 8-2, making the score 1-0 in the advantage of the Buckeyes.
Bryan Koniecko and Shuhei Uzawa were up 6-3 against Brian Starr and Bobby Deye before doubles concluded. The Buckeye pair has won 12-consecutive matches, which is the longest win streak this year by an Ohio State duo.
In singles, No. 25 Kronauge, a 2008 and '09 All-Big Ten honoree, swept Ismail in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Kronauge is now 36-7 overall, while going 11-1 at the third position in the lineup.
At No. 2 singles, No. 9 Moneke, a 2007, 08 and '09 All-Big Ten honoree, defeated Herrlinger, 6-0, 6-3. Moneke is now 36-4 overall this season with a 10-1 record at No. 2 singles. Moneke became the program's all-time career singles leader during the 2009 campaign and improves his record to 137 victories in his four-year term with the Buckeyes.
Ohio State has defeated Michigan twice already this season with the first win coming in the regular season and the second in the Big Ten tournament. Under Tucker, the Buckeyes own a 12-2 advantage over the Wolverines.
