Johns Hopkins Defeats Drew University, 5-0

BALTIMORE, MD -The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team blanked visiting Drew, 5-0, to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years. The Blue Jays improve to 21-5 on the season, while the Rangers end their season at 14-7. The Blue Jays have now won their last 12 matches against Division III opponents.
Hopkins took control of the match early, by sweeping all three doubles matches. Sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and junior Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) gavce the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead after beating Matt Imbo and Jon Pransky, 8-2, at third. Sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) pushed the lead to two with an 8-3 win at second over Alex Belfiore and Matt Brisotti. Senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and junior Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) closed out doubles play with an 8-3 win over Raul and Elliot Smego at first.
Elgort quickly pushed Hopkins' lead in the match to 4-0 with his win at third singles. He did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Belfiore. Barnaby then closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth over Imbo. With the match decided, the remaining four singles matches were halted.
Hopkins awaits the winner of the second round match between 11th-ranked NC Wesleyan and 27th-ranked Vassar. The regional final is slated for noon on Sunday, May 16 at the Goucher Tennis Courts.
