PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 5 University of West Florida men’s tennis team (11-5, 2-1 GSC) blanked No. 49 Alabama-Huntsville, 9-0, and defeated No. 20 Cameron, 5-4, Sunday at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex on the UWF Campus. UWF has won seven consecutive matches.

No. 5 West Florida 9, No. 49 Alabama-Huntsville 0

The UWF men blanked No. 49-ranked Alabama-Huntsville, 9-0, in UWF’s first match of the day. The win was West Florida’s sixth straight overall and its second Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory. With the loss, UAH moved to 1-2 in the GSC.

UWF recorded victories at all three doubles positions. At the No. 1 position, Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev teamed to defeat Daniel Canellas and Christopher Kano, 8-2. Argonauts Domenico Sano and Sean Gunnels defeated Raphael Oliviera and Guilermo Reyes, 8-0, at the No. 2 line. At No. 3, Lukas Larsson and Mike Lue tallied an 8-2 victory against Jordan Belcher and Bruno Medeiros.

In singles, Argo Jose Carlos Tolentino (Lima, Peru) recorded a 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 victory against Canellas at the No. 1 position. It was the first time Tolentino has played at the No. 1 spot for the Argonauts. Gunnels had a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kano at No. 2. At the No. 3 line, Lue tallied a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Oliviera. Sano recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win over Reyes at No. 4. Freshman Guilherme Canineo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) went to a super tie-breaker but was able to defeat Medeiros, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5, at the No. 5 spot. Playing in just his second singles match of the spring season, Larsson dropped only one game as he defeated Belcher, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6.

No. 5 West Florida 5, No. 20 Cameron 4

In its second match of the day, UWF defeated No. 20 Cameron, 5-4. UWF competes in the South Region. Cameron is in the South Central Region.

UWF won two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 Ferreira and Pozhidaev defeated Patrick Eichler and Santiago Romero, 9-7. Argonauts Larsson and Lue recorded an 8-4 victory over Manuel Barroetavena and Jeff Sasser at the No. 3 line. At the No. 2 position, Thomas Peixoto and Duje Janjic defeated UWF’s Gunnels and Sano, 8-6.

The two teams split the singles matches, with UWF tallying victories at the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 positions. At No. 2, No. 20-ranked Pozhidaev defeated Eichler, 6-2, 6-1. Tolentino recorded a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Peixoto at No. 3. After dropping the first set, Lue came back to defeat Janjic, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(9), at the No. 5 line. Cameron saw victories at the Nos. 1, 4 and 6 spots. Romero defeated Ferreira, who is currently No. 15 in the nation, in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 1. At No. 4, Barroetavena defeated Gunnels, 7-6(2), 6-4. Freshman Sano was defeated by Clerc, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6.
