DALLAS, Texas – St. Edward’s took home the Heartland Conference championship after defeating Newman 7-1 Friday afternoon at the Kiest Tennis Center.

The Hilltoppers went up 2-1 in doubles action. Pedro Bronstrup and Ryan Wiggins took the first St. Edward’s doubles victory 8-5. At spot No. 3, James Rogers and Alex Bueno defeated their opponents 8-3.

“Wiggins really stepped up in doubles action and helped get a big win,” head coach Russell Sterns said.

In singles action, the Hilltoppers dominated the Jets and won six consecutive matches to clinch the series.

In three sets, Ned Boone took down his opponent 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 1 spot. Mick Walter followed with a win against Christopher Copenhaver 6-1, 6-3. At the No. 3 spot, Wiggins fought hard against Chris King to win 6-3, 6-4 while Rogers and Bueno continued the Hilltopper winning streak with wins at both the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively.

“Newman was a worthy opponent,” Sterns said. “They have really improved and they were a good team to compete against. This match will help us prepare for the upcoming regional.”

In addition to being Heartland Conference Champions, Boone, Walter, Bronstrup, Wiggins, Rogers, and Bueno were all chosen for the all-conference team. St. Edward’s also swept individual awards where Boone was named Player of the Year, Walter was named Senior of the Year, Bronstrup was named Freshman of the Year, and Sterns was named Head Coach of the Year.
